Divers Light Up the WPIAL Scoreboard

AAA WPIAL DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

After a very interesting season of ups and downs, ins and outs, practice, no practice, then practice again, the team finally getting to meet other teams and show what we can do! The SV Divers once again excelled this season and had more qualify than permitted to bring to the WPIAL meet on the boys side – Congratulations to all! Isaiah Clerkley, Sam Skeen, Sam Hersick, Jeremiah Laslavic, Matthew Laslavic and Trevor Elliott, Ashley Felitsky, Abby Kutchma and Rylie Smith.

Early in the morning, after all Covid protocol followed, our SV boy divers walked on deck to quite a collection of talent coming into the boys portion of the WPIAL Championship meet.  20 of the top AAA competitors, with our 4 amongst the top of the list.  Trevor and Matthew seniors, Jeremiah and Sam sophomores. We were encouraged of course to do our very best and bring home as many points as possible (42-45 if possible) meaning standing in the 4th, 5th, 8th and 12th spots by the end of the meet. Challenge accepted, our boys after the first 5 round of dives were doing well, 3rd Matthew, 5th Jeremiah, 7th, Sam and 8th Trevor. Unlike last year with only 20 divers, all boys were permitted to go through 8 rounds before the first cut, so with each round passing there was a rush of divers to the monitor to see where each diver was placing…fun for some, joking around to see who was being sandwiched by the “brothers”.  After round 8,the boys are 3rd Matthew, Trevor jumping up in line into 4th, Jeremiah at a solid 6th and Sam in 12th.  All advancing into the final 3 dives, which are either your 3 favorites, 3 hardest or 3 newest…so all are going into the final stretch, reach and pointing of toes – Our SV Boys placed in the top 16.  11th for Sam 324.10 after coming back from a season long injury last year.  Standing on the podium together… in 6th  place,  Matthew 371.60, 5th Jeremiah 379.05 and on the #3 spot on the podium Trevor 396.15, (better than the order requested)…our SV boys brought even more points for the team going into the swim portion of the meet, 49!!!! Way to go boys. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Next, our talented 3 Raider Ladies, Rylie Smith,  4 time qualifier and senior, Ashley Felitsky 3 time qualifier junior and Abby Kutchma first time diver, first time qualifier and senior. As in years past our ladies are within a talented group of divers seated in position of great expectations.  That’s what happens from focus and hard work throughout the season.  For the ladies competition, as in previous years, cuts were made from 28, to 20 to the final 16.  Moving through the first 5 dives nicely Ashley and Rylie found themselves in 4th and 7th. Abby, having completed her dives, unfortunately felt the sting of not quite making that first cut and would not move on to perform the rest of her list.  She finished in 23rd overall.  Quite an accomplishment for a first time diver and qualifier in a new sport – she was eager and ready to cheer her teammates on.  Solid through rounds 6, 7 and 8 Ashley and Rylie remain in 4th and 7th.  With poise and grace these young ladies performed their final 3 dives of the meet, and for Rylie her diving career…both to stand proudly on the podium for Rylie 7th with a score of 367.85 and Ashley in 4th with a score of 396.25. (27 points for the ladies going into the swim portion of the meet)CONGRATULATIONS!

In a season with Covid-19, and for the safety of our athletes, the #1 finisher gets to go to the PIAA state meet leaving 4 talented divers in each district behind.  So today we get to celebrate that  for the 4th straight year, Seneca Valley Diving qualified to dive at the PIAA state meet. The three of our SV divers who would have been taking that trip were, Trevor, for a 2nd time! Jeremiah and Ashley a first time visit. – CONGRATULATIONS!!! A great accomplishment for you all.
