SV Sweeps Home Opener

Raiders break pool record, defeat section rival Pine Richland in first home meet

The Seneca Valley Raiders Swim and Dive team defeated section rival Pine Richland Rams in a decisive victory of 100 to 78 for the girls and 104 to 73 for the boys. The boys 200 Free A Relay Team of Danny Simoes, Kevin Donaldson, Haihan Xu, and Gavin Blazer broke the SV pool record with a time of 1:27.77, which is currently the top seeded time in WPIAL for this event. The Raiders’ record after this win is 4-0 for both boys and girls.

DIVING

The divers started out the meet with the girls placing 1-2-4. Junior Ashley Felitsky came in first with a score of 213.85, a performance which has given her an 11th place berth in WPIAL girls diving this season to date. Senior Abby Kutchma placed second with a strong showing in her first section meet with a 174.65. Junior Ashley Stewart earned 4th place points for the Raiders. Great first home meet for the girls!

The boys once again took 1-2-3 for the Raiders. Senior and team captain Trevor Elliott was first with a whopping 232.60, a score that has ranked him 4th in WPIAL boys diving this season to date. Senior Matthew Laslavic came in second place with a 190.55, and this was with only five dives. And Sophomore Sam Hersick came up with a third place finish for the Raiders. Another strong outing for the boys!

GIRLS SWIMMING

In swimming action, the Lady Raiders earned first and third right out of the gate in the 200 Medley Relay, with the SV relay A and B teams adding 10 points to the board. The team of sophomore Peri Gaguzis, senior Kendall Craig, junior Abby Perry, and senior Kristen Bedell took first with a time of 1:53.96, while the B relay team of freshman Bella Kling, senior Sydney Sweger, senior Dilini Ranaweera, and sophomore McKenzie Van Iddekinge took third.

Co-captain Kendall Craig jumped right back in the pool for the next event, taking first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle, with strong support from senior Annabel Morrisard in third place and senior Bella Stefanowicz in fourth. Then the girls added another 11 points to the board in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, with junior Ria Dietz turning in a commanding performance to take first place with a time of 2:19.52, with help from Carly Brunello in second place and Sloan Meyers in fifth. Kristen Bedell and Peri Gaguzis showed off their sprinting in the 50 yard freestyle, capturing first and second in the quick race.

Abby Perry and Peri Gaguzis stepped up to the blocks for the 100 Yard Butterfly and blew away the competition with their first and second place finishes, with support and points for the team from junior Eva Carney who came in fourth. Up next was the 100 Yard Freestyle, where Bella Kling and senior and co-captain Edie Sawyer took first and second in a well-matched and close race, turning in times of 56.97 and 57.44 respectively. McKenzie Van Iddekinge took fifth place in the 100 Free. In the 500 Yard Freestyle, the Lady Raiders took first, second, and fourth. Seniors Bella Stefanowicz and Emma Kreber battled it out lap for lap, with the race for first coming down to the last 25 yards when Emma out touched Bella at the wall by one tenth of a second to take the gold. Junior Bryn Carney turned in a fourth place finish in the 500 free, helping SV earn 12 points in the event.

The Raider girls took first and second place in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay and added another 12 points to their lead. The A team was helmed by Edie Sawyer, with Abby Perry and Peri Gaguzis in the second and third legs, and Annabel Morrisard anchoring for the win. The B team consisted of McKenzie Van Iddekinge, Cara Della Toffalo, Sydney Sweger, and Sloan Meyers. With the girls so far ahead of their Pine Richland counterparts, the rest of the Raiders’ events were swum as exhibition. The girls’ finishes in the 100 Yard Backstroke - by Kristen Bedell, Bella Kling, and Dilini Ranaweera - were the three fastest of the race, as were the three 100 Yard Breaststroke races by Seneca swimmers Ria Dietz, Carly Brunello, and Sydney Sweger. In the final event for the girls, the Seneca 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Abby Perry, Edie Sawyer, Annabel Morrisard, and Bella Kling turned in the fastest finish at 3:52.90, with support from the B relay of Bella Stefanowicz, Cara Della Toffalo, Bryn Carney, and McKenzie Van Iddekinge and the C relay of Sloan Meyers, Emma Kreber, Taryn Wilson, and Paige Walko.

The final score of 100 to 78 was the girls’ third consecutive win of the season.

BOYS SWIMMING

On the Boys side, the 200 Yard Medley Relay had each of the boys three relay teams crushing their counterparts from Pine Richland. The A Relay consisted of Gavin Blazer, Haihan Xu, Danny Simoes, and Zach Lozowski who captured first place with a time of 1:39.09. The B relay took third with a lineup of Conner Seeley, Zach Cox, Renhan Xu, and Brian Whitney. The C relay team were also able to defeat their counterpart from Pine Richland, with Owen Tekelenburg, Ronny Royhab, Alex Kim, and Noah Peterson able to bring home fifth place.

In the 200 Freestyle the boys had a dominant showing, with Kevin Donaldson easily winning with a time of 1:50.07. Team co-captain Matt Stevens took second and sophomore Logan Hockenberry made it a clean sweep with a third place finish. In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, the brothers Xu were buoyed by the early success of their teammates, and Haihan Xu took first with a 2:00.50, and was followed to the wall by Renhan Xu who took second. Owen Tekelenburg ensured points for the team by taking fifth place.

The 50 Freestyle had the Seneca trend of taking the top spots continue. Danny Simoes took first with a 22.11, and team co-captain Connor Anderson showed his sprinting ability with a second place finish. Danny Kane made sure that the team captured points by finishing in fifth.

When the boys took the blocks for the 100 Butterfly, Gavin Blazer captured first with a 53.72, and Logan Hockenberry and Alex Kim were able to secure fourth and fifth. In the 100 freestyle it was a close race for the top two spots; unfortunately for Pine Richland the top two contestants were both from Seneca. Frankie Walton was able to finish first with a 52.30, and was followed into the wall by Connor Anderson. Danny Kane swam hard and was able to bring home fourth. 

In the 500 Freestyle, Seneca continued their dominance with a clean sweep of the top three spots. Renhan Xu finished well ahead of the field with a time of 5:00.34. Matt Stevens and sophomore Connor Seeley took care of business and swept the event for Seneca by taking second and third place respectively. 

The boys again dominated the 200 Freestyle Relay, taking first, second, and fifth place. The A relay team of Danny Simoes, Kevin Donaldson, Haihan Xu, and Gavin Blazer took first with a time of 1:27.77, breaking the SV pool record and earning them the top relay berth so far atop all other WPIAL AAA teams. The B team of Zach Lozowski, Frankie Walton, Logan Hockenberry, and Connor Anderson took second and the C team of Brian Whitney, Noah Petersen, Alex Kim, and Danny Kane finished fifth.

With the meet well in hand, the final events had the Boys swimming exhibition. In the 100 Backstroke Kevin Donaldson finished with a time of 56.56. while Owen Tekelenburg and Zach Cox also had strong finishes. The 100 Breaststroke had Haihan Xu finish with the best time, with senior swimmer Brian Whitney obtaining the third best time. Freshman Ronny Royhab showed his racing spirit, as he was in a tough race with his Pine Richland counterpart, but got the touch by .36 seconds, with a strong finish to the wall.

In the last event the boys continued swimming hard. The A relay in the 400 Freestyle Relay consisted of Daniel Simoes, Gavin Blazer, Frankie Walton, and Zach Lozowski, and they didn't let up on the opponent, finishing with the best time of 3:29.64. The B relay team of Connor Anderson, Connor Seeley, Matt Stevens, and Zach Cox had the third best time while the C relay team of Logan Hockenberry, Danny Kane, Renhan Xu, and Noah Peterson had the fourth best time.

The final score showed the strength of the Seneca Valley Boys as they came away with the victory with a score of 104 to 73, their third consecutive win of the season.
