Raiders Start Season with Two Wins

The SV Raiders Swim and Dive Team kicked off the 2019-20 season with a bang on Monday, December 9th, dominating the Knoch Knights 103 to 43 for the girls and 101 to 64 for the boys. SV swimmers and divers secured a total of 31 individual WPIAL cuts and 5 relay WPIAL cuts at their first meet of the season, handily beating last year’s first meet record of 25 individual and 4 relay cuts!

Diving
Raider Divers set the tone with seniors Mackenzie Clark, Meghan Keppler, and Maddie Montalbano placing first, second, and third for the girls. Juniors Matt Laslavic and Trevor Elliott took first and second place for the boys, and freshman Jeremiah Laslavic contributed to the boys win over Knoch.

The girls 200 Yard Medley Relay team - junior Annabel Morrisard swimming backstroke, junior Edie Sawyer swimming breaststroke, senior Julia Listwak swimming butterfly, and junior Bella Stefanowicz swimming the anchor freestyle leg - got the meet off to a fast start, placing first in the event and earning the WPIAL cut. The 200 medley relay team of freshman Adelie Gifford, junior Sydney Sweger, sophomore Eva Carney, and junior Lauren Bedell placed second in the event.
Sophomores Abby Perry and Cara Della Toffalo and junior Emma Kreber swept first, second and third place in the 200 freestyle, and juniors Kendall Craig, Edie Sawyer, and Carly Brunello took the top three spots in the 200 individual medley (IM).
The first-second-third streak continued with all the girls’ races: junior Kristen Bedell (with her first-ever WPIAL cut), Eva Carney, and Adelie Gifford in the 50 freestyle; Julia Listwak, senior and team captain Maya Dietz, and junior Dilini Ranaweera in the 100 butterfly; Kendall Craig, senior and team captain Emily Tekelenburg, and junior Delaney Molinero in the 100 freestyle; Bella Stefanowicz, Abby Perry, and Emma Kreber in the 500 freestyle; Annabel Morrisard, Dilini Ranaweera, and Adelie Gifford in the 100 backstroke; Edie Sawyer, Sydney Sweger, and Carly Brunello in the 100 breaststroke, and dominating performances in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The boys 200 Medley Relay - consisting of senior and team captain Owen Blazer swimming backstroke, freshman Haihan Xu swimming breast, sophomore Danny Simoes swimming fly, and senior and team captain Max Skeen swimming the anchor freestyle leg – turned in a stunning performance, easily earning the WPIAL cut and coming breathtakingly close to beating the school record set two years ago.
Just like their counterparts on the girls’ side, the Raider boys won first, second, and third in almost every race. Sophomore Kevin Donaldson took first place in the 200 Freestyle with assists from sophomore Zach Lozowski and junior Matt Stevens, then Danny Simoes, Haihan Xu, and junior Trevor Elliott followed it up with wins in the 200 IM. Max Skeen and junior Brian Whitney took the top two spots in the 50 free with an assist from freshman Frankie Walton.
The SV boys continued to put up fast times in their races, with brothers Owen and Gavin Blazer (freshman) and senior Pace Zec taking the top three spots in the 100 fly, followed by speedy swims in the 100 free by Danny Simoes, Max Skeen, and Zach Lozowski and in the 500 free by juniors Renhan Xu, Matt Stevens, and Connor Anderson. Freshman Connor Seeley (with his first-ever WPIAL cut), Frankie Walton, and Owen Tekelenburg slayed the 100 back, while Owen Blazer, Haihan Xu, and Logan Hockenberry made quick work of the 100 breast. The boys did well in the 200 free relay and ended the night with the top three times in the 400 free relay.
